Can I Use a Vacuum With a Slightly Bent Prong?

Outlet Prong

• The outlet prong is attached to the electrical cord that plugs into an electrical outlet. The prong has two metal pieces that allow electricity to run the vacuum from an electrical outlet. Some vacuum models are three-pronged. If one prong is bent, attempt to bend it back into place when the vacuum is not turned on or plugged into an outlet. After bending the prong back into place, plug it into the outlet, and turn on the vacuum. If the vacuum functions, the prong is fixed.

Accessory Prong

• Some vacuum models have a power wand attached to a hose, which attaches to the canister of the vacuum. The power wand picks up dust and debris, and the suction moves the dirt through the hose into the canister’s vacuum bag. The prong on the hose or the power wand, depending on the vacuum model, will latch if it's slightly bent.

Repairs

• If the prong is bent and doesn’t plug in or latch, it can be repaired by a vacuum repair service retailer or directly by the manufacturer’s authorized dealer. It might also be covered under the vacuum’s warranty. Consult the owner’s manual for the vacuum to review the warranty timeline and limitations. If the part is covered under its warranty, the parts and repairs will be free of charge.

Care

• To ensure the prong does not bend or become damaged, stow the vacuum accessories properly after each use. Wrap the electrical cord around its holder, or retract the cord when it is straight and flat on the floor. On canister-style vacuums, hang the hose over something, such as utility closet hooks or a closet bar. Do not store the vacuum’s accessories on the floor to avoid damage.
