Can You Sanitize a Used Cement Septic Tank?

A septic system stores water, waste and other sewage in a tank from a home or business. Sewer pipes lead from drains and toilets from the house or business into the tank. Some septic tanks are built using concrete and cement. Cement septic tanks provide a long-lasting, sturdy storage system. Sanitize a used cement tank before installing it, if you found a deal on a used one. If the tank is installed and in use, it should be maintained properly. While in use, it technically cannot be sanitized.
  1. Septic Tank Operation

    • A septic tank is underground and connected to wastewater pipes in the home. The tank also connects to a distribution box and drain pipes in the ground, which distributes the used effluent to pipes in a drain field. The drain field is hidden underground in the homeowner’s yard.

    Open Septic Tank

    • An unsealed and uninstalled septic tank can be sanitized. The most convenient way to sanitize it is with bleach and a power washer. Complete this on an open cement septic tank. Use a spray bottle to apply bleach to the sides of the tank. Also spray the drain pipe openings with bleach. Allow the bleach to settle in the pores of the cement for about 30 minutes. Spray the drain pipe openings with the power washer to remove the bleach. Spray the sides of the tank with a power washer, starting at the top and working down the walls until the bleach is rinsed.

    Installed Septic Tank

    • Sanitizing a sealed and installed septic tank is not necessary. The tank functions properly by in-tank organic bacteria breaking down the waste flushed into the tank. If smells are coming from an installed tank or you feel it needs to be sanitized, standard maintenance will reduce smells and improve the tank’s function.

    Maintenance

    • To maintain a septic tank and reduce smells, pump the tank every three years, depending on the size of the tank and the number of individuals regularly using water and toilets. Avoid flushing anything except toilet paper into the septic tank. Use biodegradable toilet paper, which breaks down easier in the septic tank. Other products flushed in the toilet will not break down properly causing blockages and the tank to fill more quickly. Use a septic tank maintenance product by putting it into the toilet and flushing it once a month. These products contain organic bacteria that helps break down waste.
