Dust Care for a Central Vacuum Cleaner

A central vacuum cleaner is a unit installed in an area such as a basement or garage. Hoses or PVC pipes are connected to the unit and outlets throughout the house. To use the central vacuum, a hose is connected to one of the outlets and attached to cleaning accessories. Dust and debris are then collected in the central vacuum unit when the unit is turned on. Like many standard vacuum cleaners, the central vacuum cleaner can collect a large amount of dust in the unit, thus requiring dust care and maintenance. Unplug the unit when performing maintenance on it.
  1. The Main Unit

    • A central vacuum cleaner’s unit is powered by a dedicated and grounded electrical outlet. An indicator light illuminates on the unit when filters and bags require replacing. Central vacuums have a large filter and bag. Some units use a standard paper or plastic bag to collect dust and debris. Replacing the filter and bag routinely will reduce dust build-up in the unit. The seal for the filter and vacuum bag should be airtight to ensure dust doesn’t enter the unit. If dust is in the unit, wipe the parts with a dry, lint-free cotton rag.

    Attachments

    • The hoses that connect to the outlets can collect dust. Ensure the hose is connected securely to the outlet when using the hose to vacuum. Use a dry lint-free cotton rag to wipe the outside of the hose from end to end. Check the power wand to ensure there are no clogs or obstructions. Cut away obstructions from the brush roll, and wipe the power wand and other attachments with a dry, lint-free rag.

    Accessories

    • Check the power wand to ensure there are no clogs or obstructions. Cut away obstructions from the brush roll and wipe the power wand and other attachments with a dry, lint-free rag. Plastic attachments that do not use electric to operate from the hose may be rinsed in warm water. Dry the accessories completely before using them again.

    Casing

    • Because the central unit is placed in an area, such as a basement or garage, it collects dust on its casing. The suction produced from the central vacuum cleaner will also collect dust from surrounding areas when the unit is turned on. Routinely clean the casing of the unit with a duster or dry rag to avoid the dust getting into the unit.
