What Makes a Kenmore Electric Stove Spark?

Sparking oven elements pose a fire hazard and need to be replaced. The reasons for the sparking can vary, but should never be ignored. As a precaution, the power should be cut off to the stove at the first sign of sparking until the problem is resolved.
  1. Worn Element

    • The most common reason for a Kenmore electric stove to spark is that the oven element is worn out. On average, oven elements last 20 years with regular use. As the element ages, the coil weakens and fissures start to form. The pits and breaks are no longer insulated, causing sparking.

    Debris

    • Mothers always warn about cleaning up messes immediately in the oven. The reason for this warning is that debris on the stove elements can spark and catch fire. Also, the food stinks as it turns to charcoal. If this is the case, some oven cleaner and a good scrubbing is all you’ll need.

    Scratches

    • If the element becomes scratched during cleaning or other maintenance, you’ll start seeing sparks. Oven elements must be cleaned with care using non-abrasive and oven-safe cleaners. Anything else can scratch the element, causing spaces for sparks to escape.

    Cautions

    • Whenever you work with your oven, unplug the oven from its power source. Ovens carry a 220 volt charge when plugged into an outlet. Additionally, if using oven cleaner, work in a well-ventilated room and avoid breathing any fumes from the cleaner. For replacement, remove the element and take it to your local appliance supply store to get the right size replacement.
