Can I Convert an Appliance to Be Stainless?

Stainless steel appliances contribute to a sleek and modern look in your kitchen. However, not everyone has the funds to replace their working appliances with new, stainless steel ones. Fortunately, you can convert your appliances so they appear stainless steel without the expensive price tag of new appliances.
  1. Stainless Steel

    • Stainless steel appliances provide a wide array of benefits for your kitchen. Steel is easy to maintain and easy to clean. Regularly wiping the appliance with a damp cloth will keep it looking its best. In addition, stainless steel does not harbor germs, making it a better choice than plastic for you and your family. Stainless steel does not fade or rust, as other metal finishes do, and will not affect the flavor of foods.

    Appliance Film

    • Appliance films are available in various finishes, including stainless steel. These films are fingerprint-, chemical-, scratch- and stain-resistant, and are cheaper than purchasing new appliances. Start by wiping the entire surface of the appliance where you will install the film with warm, soapy water. Remove the residue with cool water and dry with a lint-free towel. Measure the area the film will cover and add an additional 1/2-inch to every side. Cut the film to your measurements using a utility blade. When cutting the film, use one smooth, continuous motion. Lightly mist the surface of the appliance with water and peel the paper backing off carefully. Place the corner of the film to the corresponding corner of the appliance and press the film against the surface, smoothing the film with your hand as you go. Once you have installed the film, use a squeegee to remove air bubbles and cut excess film from the sides with a utility knife.

    Liquid Stainless Steel

    • Liquid stainless steel is actually stainless steel rather than paint or a facade. Before you can apply the liquid steel, you must first remove the appliance's handles, sand off rust spots, clean the entire appliance and protect areas you do not want changed with painter’s tape. When you are ready to begin, stir the liquid stainless steel thoroughly and apply a thin coat of the liquid to the surface of the appliance with a roller. Use a wide foam brush to remove lap marks in the wet steel. Apply two or three more liquid stainless steel coats to the appliances, allowing it to dry thoroughly between each application.

    Considerations

    • Another option is to trade older appliances in for new, stainless steel ones. Many home improvement and appliance stores offer a trade-in, if the appliance is in working order and remains aesthetically appealing. If you choose to use an appliance film or liquid stainless steel to convert your appliance, always follow the instructions included with the specific product your are using. Following the manufacturer's recommended directions will provide you with the best results.
