How to Fix the Flow Gauge in a Bissell Steamer So It Comes Out

Bissell manufactures a variety of steamer carpet cleaners. Models such as the PowerSteamer have a flow gauge, referred to as a “flow indicator,” that can be removed. The flow indicator spins to show the machine is releasing cleaning solution onto the carpet. It may become lodged if it's replaced too tightly.

Turn off the steamer, and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Step on the handle release pedal, and lower the handle to the floor to access the flow indicator gauge.

Locate the flow indicator gauge on the base of the machine. Unscrew the flow indicator cap until it’s loose and can be pulled out of the machine. If the flow indicator cap was over-tightened, the ridges to screw it back in may be stripped. Gently insert a jeweler’s flat-head screwdriver between the flow indicator cap and its casing. Push the handle of the screwdriver down until the indicator cap pops out. Three parts should come out: the cap, the red rotor and the white filter.

Clean the flow indicator parts with warm water. Replace the cap and parts on the machine. Attempt to tighten the flow indicator gauge lightly. If the screw ridges are stripped, place the flow indicator gauge back into the machine without turning it.
