Cleaning & Removing the Drain Pump in a Whirlpool Model WFW9400SW00

When your Whirlpool WFW9400SW00 residential washing machine fails to drain properly, chances are you need to clean or replace the washer drain pump. Signs that your Whirlpool washer's pump is failing include wet clothes, long wash times and excessive vibration. Hiring a technician to perform a simple pump replacement job can be costly. Save time and money by learning how to repair this common front-load washer yourself.
  1. Removing the Control Panel and Cabinet

    • In order to clean and remove the drain pump on your machine, you must remove the control panel first. Unplug the appliance before you begin. Locate the plastic end caps on the sides of the main control panel. Snap them off and unscrew the screws holding the panel in place. Lift up the control panel, unplug the wire connector and snap out the spring clips, using a screwdriver. This releases the cabinet, the main metallic body of the washer, so you can access the drain pump. Carefully remove the cabinet and place it to the side.

    Removing the Pump

    • Removing the pump on your WFW9400SW00 washer is a straightforward process. Locate the pump, which is connected to two retractable black rubber hoses, and remove it by unsnapping the metal fasteners holding it in place. Use pliers to release the two metal clamps holding the hoses in place, and slowly unplug the hoses from the drain. Water will likely splash out from the hoses, so use caution to avoid getting wet. Place a bucket under the hoses to collect any excess water.

    Cleaning

    • Cleaning your drain pump and filter is easy. Once you’ve removed the pump from the machine, transport it to the kitchen sink. Wash the pump out thoroughly, removing debris and other buildup. Don’t be surprised if you find loose change, hair clips, buttons and other items.

    Replacing

    • A replacement drain pump for the Whirlpool WFW9400SW00 costs around $100. Remove the new pump from the packaging. Slide the two hoses over the holes on the new pump and secure it with the clamps. Align the pump with the motor shaft and slide it into place. Attach the two pump clips. Reinstall the washer cabinet, sliding it into place, and pull the control panel down. Reattach the wire connect, clips and screws to secure the control panel to the cabinet. Plug your washer back in.
