How to Get a Grease Smell Out of a Microwave

Reheating greasy foods in the microwave can leave your microwave with an unpleasant grease odor that greets you each time you open the door. Less than appetizing, this aroma of old, stale grease has a tendency to linger, making it a smelly experience every time you need to use your microwave. To eliminate this greasy smell and ultimately make your microwave more pleasant to use, give it a thorough cleaning.

Things You'll Need

  • Microwave-safe cup or bowl
  • White vinegar
  • Sponge
  • Baking soda
  • Dish soap
  • Small brush
  • Cloth
  • Towel
  • Lemon juice

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a microwave-safe cup or bowl with equal parts white vinegar and water.

    • 2

Heat the solution for two minutes in the microwave on “high.”

    • 3

Remove the solution from the microwave, and allow it to cool slightly to avoid getting burnt.

    • 4

Dip a sponge into the solution, and sprinkle baking soda over it.

    • 5

Unplug the microwave, and scrub the inside with the sponge to remove grease from the walls and the door. Remove the tray, and wash it separately with warm soapy water.

    • 6

Dip a small brush into the warm solution, and clean the seal around the door well.

    • 7

Rinse the inside of the microwave with a clean damp cloth using warm water.

    • 8

Wipe the inside of the microwave dry with a clean towel, and leave it to finish air-drying for about 20 minutes.

    • 9

Mix 1 cup of lemon juice with 1 cup of water in a microwave-safe cup or bowl.

    • 10

Plug the microwave back, and replace the tray before heating the lemon solution for two minutes on “high.” This will help to eliminate the vinegar smell. Repeat as needed.
