How to Get the Stink Out of a Dishwasher

If you use a dishwasher to wash your dishes, you’ll likely have to clean it from time to time. This is because small pieces of food will slowly accumulate and eventually cause the dishwasher to have an unpleasant odor. Fortunately, you can remedy this problem quite easily with regular cleaning and the help of a few cleaning products you have sitting around your house.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Bowl
  • Toothbrush
  • Paper towel
  • White vinegar or baking soda or bleach

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a few drops of dish soap into a bowl of hot water.

    • 2

Dip a toothbrush into this mixture, and scrub the crevices and corners of your dishwasher. Pay special attention to the area around the drain where food is prone to collecting. This will help release food buildup that may be causing your dishwasher to stink.

    • 3

Remove as much food debris from the dishwasher as possible by wiping it up with a paper towel.

    • 4

Pour a cup of white vinegar, bleach or baking soda into the bottom of your empty dishwasher, and then run it through a full cycle using hot water. These products will clean the inside of your dishwasher, as well as deodorize it.
