How to Clean Burnt Sugar Off the Stove

When a recipe goes awry, especially one that involves hot or melted sugar, you can find yourself with a mess on your hands and on your stove. Burnt sugar can be particularly strong when it attaches to a hard surface like a stove. However, you don't have to be stuck with the sticky mess forever. Use a few simple steps to dislodge the baked-on mess, and restore your kitchen to order and cleanliness.

Things You'll Need

  • Sponge
  • Paper towels
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Nylon scrubbing sponge
  • Dish rag

Instructions

    • 1

Saturate the burnt sugar by placing a soggy sponge or paper towel on the stain. Ensure that it's not so soggy that water runs onto other parts of your stove, but is wet enough to allow the water to soak the stain and dissolve it for easy removal.

    • 2

Turn the oven on to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes. This will allow the heat from your oven to gently warm the stovetop and further loosen the burnt-on sugar while it soaks.

    • 3

Place a dime-sized drop of strong dishwashing detergent onto a nylon scrubbing sponge. Scrub the stain with a considerable amount of elbow grease. The stain will lift easily off of your stove.

    • 4

Use a clean, damp dish rag to wipe down the stove surface and to remove any traces of soap. Repeat the process until your stove is clean and free of soap and stains.

    • 5

Remove stained burners and drip pans, and immerse them in a sink full of hot, sudsy water. Allow them to soak for half an hour before scrubbing them with a nylon sponge until clean. Dry the burners and drip pans thoroughly before placing them back on your stove.
