How to Get Stains Off a Stainless Steel Stove

Stainless steel is made from an alloy of steel, chromium and other metals in varying amounts. The outer layer reacts with the air and forms chromium oxide that protects the surface from corrosion. Although the name implies that the metal is stainless, it can still rust or stain when exposed to dirt, residue and water. When your stainless steel stove accumulates stains, don't just reach for any household cleaner. Bleach, ammonia and harsh abrasives can pit or scratch stainless steel. Fine-textured powder cleansers without bleach can restore the shine and color of your stainless steel stove without damaging the material.

Things You'll Need

  • Sponge
  • Fine-textured powder cleanser
  • Towel

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a sponge with hot water, and wring it out.

    • 2

Wipe the stainless steel stove with the sponge to remove as much of the residue or stain as possible. Don't dry the surface.

    • 3

Sprinkle the stain with a light layer of fine-textured powder cleanser, and scrub it with the damp sponge. Add more cleanser, and rinse the sponge as needed to remove the stain.

    • 4

Rinse the stove with a clean, damp sponge until all traces of the cleanser are gone.

    • 5

Dry the stove with a towel.
