How to Keep the Top of a Gas Stove Clean With a Drip Pan Cover

A conventional gas stove contains drip trays to catch spilled-over food, which prevents liquid damage to the stove's burner ports. Individual drip trays rest under each grate and become gunky from hardened liquids over time. The drip tray can withstand a considerable amount of liquid buildup before it needs to be cleaned. Removing each grate is necessary to access the drip tray, and some are built into the stove depending on the manufacturer.

Things You'll Need

  • Sink stopper
  • Mild dishwashing liquid soap
  • Oven mittens
  • Coarse-bristled cleaning brush
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Scrubbing sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the stove's knob dial to the "Off" position, and wait for the grates to cool. The grates take up to an hour to cool completely.

    • 2

Insert the sink stopper into your kitchen sink, and fill the sink with hot water. Add 1 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid soap to the water to create a sudsy cleaning solution.

    • 3

Put on oven mittens to protect your hands, and remove the grates from the stovetop.

    • 4

Lift the drip trays from the stovetop, and place them in the sink.

    • 5

Scrub hardened liquid from the trays with a coarse-bristled cleaning brush, and wipe them dry with the cleaning cloth. Scrub the trays with a damp scrubbing sponge followed by wiping the trays dry if they cannot be removed from the stovetop.

    • 6

Rinse them with water to remove any soap residue, and then put the drip pans back on the stovetop, along with the grates.
