How to Get an Oil Splatter Off a Stove

Frying and sauteing food may result in delicious dishes, but oil droplets may appear everywhere, especially if moisture on the food hits the hot oil as it cooks. Unfortunately, you can’t just wipe up the oil splatters with a paper towel and plain water, as doing so will spread the oil. You need soap or a household cleanser to remove most, if not all, of the splatter -- but it will only take a few minutes to clean up.

Things You'll Need

  • Cleaning gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Stain-eraser sponge, household cleanser or glass-top stove cleanser
  • Clean, dry rag (optional)
  • Dish soap
  • Splatter screen (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

      Put on the cleaning gloves.

    • 2

Remove the burner grates if the stove is gas -- and place them on a paper towel on a counter or table. If the stove is a regular electric stove and not a glass-top, pull out the elements. Remove any other items that might be on the stove top, such as spoon rests.

    • 3

Wet an eraser-type sponge and squeeze out the excess water, or spray household cleanser onto a folded paper towel. If the stove top is glass, use a cleanser made specifically for that surface.

    • 4

Scrub the moistened towel or eraser on part of the oil splatter, and keep scrubbing until the oil in the spot is gone. This can take some elbow work if the splatter is old. Newer splatters should come off relatively easily.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 for the entire area containing splatters.

    • 6

Run a clean, damp towel over the areas you scrubbed, and then wipe them with a dry paper towel or rag.

    • 7

Replace the elements or grates on the stove, if you had to remove them earlier.
