How to Clean a Butter Spill in the Oven

Any spill inside your oven can cause a stinky mess that often results in smoking the next time you turn the oven on. Not every oven has a self-cleaning cycle. If yours is one of them, some elbow grease may be necessary to remove any stuck-on butter stains. But before you head out to the store to purchase one of those toxic oven cleaners, try cleaning up the spilled butter with safe products that you may already have in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels
  • Metal kitchen spatula
  • Ammonia
  • Spray bottle
  • Salt
  • Vinegar
  • Nylon scrubber sponge
  • Cellulose sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for your oven to cool down before attempting to remove the butter spill. Wipe away as much of the spill as you can with a paper towel.

    • 2

Scrape any butter residue attached to the oven with a metal kitchen spatula. Wipe away the scrapings with a paper towel.

    • 3

Fill a spray bottle with ammonia. Spray the ammonia on hard-to-remove butter stains that still remain after scraping.

    • 4

Allow the ammonia to sit for approximately five to 10 minutes. Sprinkle a generous amount of salt over the butter stain along with 1 tsp. of vinegar.

    • 5

Scrub away the butter using a nylon sponge scrubber when the concoction begins to bubble. Continue scrubbing until the butter separates from the oven.

    • 6

Run a clean cellulose sponge under lukewarm water. Wipe the area clean with the sponge. Dry the oven with a paper towel.
