Hoover brand vacuum cleaners are available in both bagged and bagless styles and have a variety of features, including self-propulsion, adjustable height and HEPA filtration. Regardless of the features, if the vacuum cleaner begins to make strange noises during use, such as a whistling sound, you should stop using the vacuum and investigate the noise to return the vacuum to normal use and possibly prevent damage to the device.
Unplug your Hoover vacuum cleaner from the power outlet.
Remove the dirt container on bagless models by sliding the latch to the left then pulling the container out. Open the lid and empty out the container, checking for items that may be blocking the nozzle and creating a noise. Replace the dirt container on the vacuum cleaner. Unzip the dirt container on bagged units and pull down on the top of the dirt bag. Slide the locking tab to the left and pull the bag out. Check the connecting nozzle for debris or obstructions and clean it out, if necessary, then replace the existing dirt bag or use a new bag if the old one is full. Slide the locking tab to the right once the bag is fully inserted then zip the container closed.
Check the filter, located inside the top of the dirt container in bagless units, for large objects or debris that may be caught in the filter. Clean the filter by tapping it over a wastebasket. Most bagged vacuum cleaners do not use a filtration system.
Press down on the pedal or lever on the base of the vacuum to lower the handle then turn the vacuum over. Remove any screws that hold the bottom plate in place and lift off the plate to inspect the brush roller and belt. Use a pair of scissors to cut away any fibers or strings caught on the brush roller as this may make a sound if it's stuck and can't turn. Replace the belt, if it appears cracked or broken, as this may also create a whistling sound.
Check the nozzle inside the base plate for any large debris or chunks that may be caught in the nozzle, causing air to whistle as the vacuum operates. Clean the nozzle if necessary.
Replace the screws on the base plate and stand the vacuum cleaner upright. Pull the hose out of the base of the vacuum and shake it firmly to dislodge any items that could be obstructing air flow and causing noise. Push the hose back into position.
