How to Get Caked-on Dishwasher Soap Out of a Dishwasher

Finding an unopened soap dispenser that should have opened during the dishwasher's wash cycle may be frustrating. Instead, the only thing you have is a dishwasher full of dirty dishes and hard, dried-on soap in the dispenser. As frustrating as this is, there is an easy method to get caked-on dishwasher soap out of a dishwasher using vinegar and a non-abrasive utensil.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic spoon
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Sponge
  • Warm water

Instructions

    • 1

Scoop the bulk of the dried dishwasher soap out of the soap dispenser. The soap typically dries and hardens inside the dispenser when it fails to open during the washing cycle.

    • 2

Pour 1 tablespoon of white distilled vinegar over the caked-on dishwasher soap.

    • 3

Scrape the remaining caked-on soap out of the dispenser with the plastic spoon. Apply a little pressure, being careful not to damage the appliance; don’t jab at the soap.

    • 4

Hold a sponge over the sink and saturate it with white distilled vinegar.

    • 5

Wipe out the soap dispenser with the sponge to remove any dried soap residue.

    • 6

Rinse the sponge with warm water and again saturate it with vinegar.

    • 7

Scrub the inside walls and door of the dishwasher with the sponge to remove caked-on dishwasher soap in these areas. Scrape the dried soap with the plastic spoon if necessary.
