How to Care for Aluminum Brew Pots

If you're new to brewing, or even if you're an old hand at it, there can be some confusion as to what is better, an aluminum brew pot or a stainless steel pot. The truth of the matter is that both types can be used to brew your beers. With just a little bit of effort, you won't be able to tell the difference between the two types of pots when you enjoy the final product. The advantages of an aluminum brew pot are that it is cheaper and it conducts heat better, allowing for faster cooking times and faster cooling periods. Just follow these simple instructions and you won't have any problems with your aluminum brew pot.

      Place a new aluminum brew pot in an oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove the pot from oven and allow it to cool naturally. This will create a passive oxide layer inside your pot, which will prevent your pot from leaching any metals into your brew as you boil it.

      Clean your pot with dish soap and a nonabrasive cleaning pad only. Do not scrub your aluminum pot with a metal scouring pad and do not use oxygen-based cleansers, as these can scratch your pot or they can break down the oxide layer you created in Step 1. Do not use harsh, caustic cleaners of any kind.

      Do not use your aluminum brew pot for general cooking, especially cooking acidic dishes such as red sauces.
