How to Get Fingerprints Off a Stainless Refrigerator

In many homes, the refrigerator door is given a hefty workout. Meal prep, snacks, beverages and putting foods away after meals mean that greasy fingerprints can turn the exterior of your stainless steel fridge into an eyesore, especially around the handle. Wiping with a cloth and water sometimes handles light fingerprints, but stainless steel often needs more than that.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Soft cloth
  • Dish detergent
  • Vinegar
  • Ammonia
  • Household gloves
  • Glass cleaner
  • Olive, baby or mineral oil

Instructions

  1. Homemade Cleaning Solutions

    • 1

Prepare a cleaning solution by squirting a few drops of dishwashing detergent into a quart of warm water. Alternatively, add a few drops of ammonia or a quarter cup of vinegar to the water, but only pick one. Don't attempt to mix substances unless you are positive it's safe to do so.

    • 2

Don your household gloves. Dip a soft, clean cloth in the cleaning solution and wring it out.

    • 3

Wipe the refrigerator's exterior, concentrating on areas that have fingerprints. Move the cloth back and forth with the grain, the fine lines that generally run horizontally.

    • 4

Dip the soft cloth back into the cleaning solution, wring out and wash any remaining fingerprint residue.

    • 5

Rinse the cleaning cloth in clear water, wring out and wipe down the refrigerator's exterior again, removing all of the cleaning solution. Dry the refrigerator with a soft, dry cloth or paper towels to avoid water spots.

    Commercial Products

    • 6

Apply a stainless steel cleaner according to the manufacturer's directions or spray a commercial glass cleaner on the surface of the fridge.

    • 7

Wipe the surface with a soft cloth, working in the direction of the grain.

    • 8

Rinse the surface and dry with a soft cloth or paper towels.

    Buffing Agents

    • 9

Place a few drops of olive oil on a soft, clean cloth. Mineral oil and baby oil work as well.

    • 10

Rub the cloth over the exterior of the refrigerator, paying special attention to the fingerprints.

    • 11

Buff the exterior with a clean cloth until it shines. Remember to work with the grain rather than against it.
