How to Clean an Oven When It Is Caked on With Food

Baking, roasting and broiling can result in food spills, stains and splatters. When food comes in contact with the oven walls or floor, the high heat causes it to evaporate rapidly. If the mess is left to sit in the hot oven for a period of time, caked-on stains will result. Full-strength ammonia can remove any tough stains without coming into direct contact with the oven's interior. Ammonia fumes work overnight to soften debris and reduce the need for heavy scrubbing.

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Non-sudsy ammonia
  • Sponge
  • Dish soap
  • Towel

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl with non-sudsy ammonia and place it in the oven. Close the oven door and allow it to sit in the cool oven overnight.

    • 2

Open the oven door, taking care not to breathe in the ammonia fumes. Remove the bowl and discard the ammonia.

    • 3

Remove the oven racks and set them aside. Thoroughly scrub the oven walls, window and floor with a damp, nonabrasive scrub sponge. Rinse the sponge as often as needed.

    • 4

Wash the oven racks in hot, soapy water with the scrub sponge. Rinse the oven racks and dry them thoroughly with a towel before placing them back into the oven.
