Distracted cooking can lead to an assortment of messes, and few are as messy and hard to clean up as plastic items that were accidentally set down on the burners. Melted plastic tends to smell bad as it burns and can cause long-term odors and problems if it is left on your flat top stove top. Fortunately, you can get melted plastic off your flat top stove with a bit of time and patience.
Turn off the burners and allow the plastic to cool completely and harden. Do not touch a hot burner or still hot melted plastic.
Scrape as much of the plastic off the burner as you can with a spoon or dull knife. In some cases, the plastic may peel up off the burner when you begin scraping and come off completely. Be gentle while scraping to avoid scratching the glass cook top.
Apply 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of vinegar to the remaining plastic and allow it to sit for several minutes. Scrub with a soft wash cloth to remove plastic.
Clean the cook top with glass cleaner or other cleaning product specifically intended for glass or ceramic covered flat top stoves. Wipe dry with paper towels.
