Choose a location where the detector will be installed. Carbon monoxide fills up a room from the top down so closer to the ceiling may be a better location. If the detector cannot be installed close to the ceiling then install it as close as possible to the furnace. Furnaces are the cause of the majority of carbon monoxide leaks in homes. This will increase the odds of an early warning.
Use a stud finder to locate a stud in the wall near the location that has been chosen for the detector.
Measure the distance between the mounting holes on the back of the mounting bracket that came with the detector using a tape measure.
Mark the distance between the mounting holes by drawing a line on the wall, on top of the stud using a pencil and tape measure. Make sure this distance is the same distance that was previously measured between the mounting holes.
Drill small holes at both ends of the line.
Attach the mounting bracket to the wall using screws and a screwdriver.
Insert the correct number and type of batteries into the carbon monoxide detector and turn it on. This varies for each type and brand of detectors.
Snap the carbon monoxide detector into place on top of the mounting bracket.
