Signs of a Chimney Fire

When buying a new home, one feature people really enjoy is an authentic fireplace.
It can be one of the most enjoyable and relaxing pastimes, until you neglect your chimney. A chimney that is not maintained properly can be very dangerous. Cleaning your chimney should be a routine action to maintain the safety of your home.
  1. Signs of a chimney fire

    • When a chimney fire starts, the signs may be described as a loud crackle or popping sound. The smoke can be dense and intense, having a strong hot smell. Shooting flames or smoke may come out of the chimney top. A low, rumbling sound may be heard that resembles the sound of a freight train. A slow-burning chimney fire may not be as noticeable since they do not get enough air, yet still can be prevented with proper maintenance.

    Cause of a chimney fire

    • As a fire is burning, a residue is created called creosote. The residue may be dry and crusty, moist and sticky, or may look wet or shiny. In every form, creosote is a combustion component. When creosote is built up, it is the perfect environment for a chimney fire to start.

How to avoid a chimney fire

    • There are several ways to avoid chimney fires. Burn seasoned or dry wood. Building a small fire that is hotter and burns more evenly will produces less smoke, also decreasing the creosote buildup. It is not recommended to burn paper, cardboard or trash because these may spark a fire.

    Contacting a chimney sweep

    • When contacting a chimney sweep, be sure to check for proper training and certification to ensure the quality of the work.

    Annual inspections

    • Keeping your chimney clean will prevent a fire from starting. It is recommended that a chimney be cleaned and inspected annually for the safety of you and your family.
