How to Replace a Smoke Detector

Replace a smoke detector that corrodes or wears out to keep everyone in your home protected. Smoke detectors react to particles in smoke and set off a fire alarm that's loud enough to wake a person from a dead sleep. Homeowner's insurance carriers and firefighters' associations consider these detectors a plausible means of early warning to save lives and reduce property losses.

  1. How to Replace a Smoke Detector

    • 1

Identify the type of smoke detector currently in place. Stand on a stepladder or chair and grip one hand around the bottom of the detector. Twist slightly counterclockwise to loosen the housing from its mounting plate. Pull down on the tab protruding out from the circular body of the housing if it will not rotate. Check for a small plug that may be inserted in a ceiling socket.

    • 2

Remove the old smoke detector. If the housing came off with a twist leave the mounting plate in place. Swinging door types have all working parts affixed to the ceiling plate. Unscrew the two mounting screws, with a Phillips head screwdriver, far enough to twist off the entire unit. Remove the plug if there is one.

    • 3

Purchase a new smoke detector of the same model if possible. If you are able to find the same model, it will attach to the same mounting plate, plug into the same outlet or fit on the same mounting screws that are already installed.

    • 4

Attach a new and different model if desired or necessary. Hold the mounting plate or ceiling plate against the ceiling in the installation location. Put in the mounting screws one at a time. Place screws through the holes and press them into the ceiling. Tighten with a Phillips screwdriver.

Install a fresh 9-volt battery if the detector uses one. Slip the battery in between the holding prongs or open the battery drawer and place it into that. Battery drawers are designed to prevent leaving smoke detectors without batteries. They won't close without a battery inside, or if the battery is positioned with the terminals reversed. Battery drawers may be difficult to close even with a battery seated properly.
