How to Troubleshoot an Electric Smoke Detector

  Test your smoke detector by holding the “test” button in for five seconds. If the alarm does not sound properly after five seconds, move on to the following steps.

  Check to make sure the battery is tightened securely in place, and that the AC backup power to the electrical detector is on. Power is run from fuse boxes or circuit breakers.

  Replace the battery in the smoke detector at least once per year, if the detector begins to beep about once per minute or if it does not sound when tested. Turn off power to the smoke detector at the main fuse box or circuit breaker and remove the detector from its place on the wall. Pull the battery out of its socket and replace with a fresh, unused battery. Replace the smoke detector and return power.

  Clean your smoke alarm if the alarm does not sound when testing, or sounds at unwanted times, like during cooking or when someone is taking a steamy shower.

  Turn off the power supply and disconnect the battery so that no power is running to the smoke detector. Remove the detector from its place.

  Vacuum your smoke detector with the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt, dust and other debris from sensors and vents.

  Dampen a rag or cloth in warm water and wipe away any stubborn dust or dirt. Dry the detector completely before returning it to use.
