How to Put a Battery in a Wired Smoke Detector

Wired smoke detectors are like any other smoke detectors, except that they are hard-wired to your home's electrical system. However, they still use batteries as a backup power source in the case your power goes out. Like any other smoke detector, the battery should be replaced on a yearly basis to ensure that the detector is in good working order. While the mechanics of a wired smoke detector are slightly different from other types, the process for putting in a battery is the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any screws from the cover of the smoke detector with a screwdriver. Depending on your particular model, you may not have to remove screws.

    • 2

Grip the cover of the detector along the sides with your fingers. Turn the cover counterclockwise until it comes loose.

    • 3

Pull the cover away to reveal small cords and the old battery.

    • 4

Remove the dead battery. Look at the battery port to determine which way the battery goes. There should be a small diagram of a battery with a “+” on one side and a “-” on the other. Insert the battery into the port according to what the diagram shows.

Screw the cover back on once the battery is successfully installed. Secure the cover in place with screws if necessary.
