Measure the width of the metal ductwork, using the tape measure.
Place the end of the tape measure at the end of the nearest duct elbow or transition. Using the permanent marker, place a mark on the side of the ductwork six times the duct's width. Air turbulence will inhibit the air flowing into the sampling tube of the smoke detector.
Remove the paper backing from the template shipped with the duct smoke detector. Press the adhesive template on the side of the duct, with the left side of the template positioned at the mark you placed on the side of the duct with the permanent marker.
Put on your safety glasses.
Secure the 1 1/4-inch hole saw into the 3/8-inch drill motor.
Drill a 1 1/4-inch hole with the drill motor at the two locations marked on the smoke detector template. Exchange the hole saw for the 3/32-inch drill bit.
Drill a 3/32-inch hole at each location marked on the smoke detector template.
Attach the sampling and exhaust tubes as described in the duct smoke detector installation manual. Slide the duct smoke detector into place.
Secure the duct smoke detector to the ductwork with the enclosed screws and the Phillips screwdriver.
Consult a licensed electrical to wire the installed duct smoke detector. If the smoke detector is wired incorrectly, it will not function properly or will malfunction.
