How to Install a 6250 Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors are vital additions to any home, as they unobtrusively and inexpensively provide protection against the threat of smoke or fire. The Edwards 6250 smoke detector must be installed directly ("hard-wired") to the home's electrical wiring so it will receive a continuous source of power. You can wire the smoke detector yourself. A few standard household tools will be needed as will a basic understanding of electricity.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the fuse box. Trip the circuit breaker that will discontinue electricity to the room or area where you're going to install the 6250 smoke detector. Place a ladder next to the wall or beneath the ceiling where there is a wall or ceiling electrical plate. Be sure to choose a plate that is mounted high. A smoke detector mounted low on or even halfway up a wall is effectively useless.

    • 2

Remove the screws surrounding the plate with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the plate off the wall or ceiling. Pull the black and white wires from out of the hole that is now revealed.

    • 3

Strip 1/2 inch of plastic insulation off the ends of the black and white wires attached to the back of the 6250 smoke detector -- use wire strippers to do this, and use a ruler if necessary to ensure you strip the right amount of insulation. Repeat this procedure with the ends of the black and white wires that are protruding from the hole.

    • 4

Twist the exposed end of the black wire from the smoke detector around the exposed end of the black wire coming out of the hole. Twist the exposed end of the white wire from the smoke detector around the exposed end of the white wire coming out of the hole.

    • 5

Place a screw-tab connector on the end of each twisted pair of wires. Twist the screw-tab connectors clockwise until you feel resistance.

    • 6

Push the wiring into the hole. Place the smoke detector over the hole and screw it in with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Return the electricity to the room or area.
