Problems With Smoke Alarms Chirping

Smoke alarms should be regularly maintained to ensure the safety of your home. A chirping sound from your smoke alarm indicates that it is in need of attention. You should clean and test your smoke alarms regularly and replace them every 10 years. Call your local smoke alarm installer if the chirping persists after maintenance has been carried out.
  1. Low Battery

    • One of the most common causes of chirping alarms is a low battery. On average, batteries need to be replaced every year. To change the battery, remove the cover and the old batteries, and place the new batteries into the alarm facing the same way as the old ones. Test your alarm to ensure that it is in working order once you have replaced the batteries.

    Battery Terminal Is Obstructed

    • If your alarm is chirping but the batteries are new, check that the battery pull tab is not obstructing the terminal. Completely remove the battery pull tab prior to installation. Gently wipe terminals, and replace batteries. Test to see if the alarm is functioning.

    Restore Power

    • Hardwired smoke alarms will beep or chirp if their power supply has been interrupted or if there is a loose wire. Wait until power is restored or the wire has been connected and reset the alarm.

    Clean the Smoke Alarm

    • Smoke alarms will chirp when dirt and insects or cobwebs have clogged the sensors. Simply remove the cover, and vacuum the dust and debris from the unit. This should be performed every six months. Test the alarm once the cover has been replaced.
