How to Troubleshoot a Fire & Smoke Alarm

Fire and smoke alarms, or detectors, are a necessary part of every home. Properly positioned throughout a home, fire and smoke alarms stand watch and sound an early warning to alert family members to potential danger. The warning allows for a safe exit from the home. When minor problems arise with a detector, basic troubleshooting will oftentimes pinpoint and remedy issues without the need for replacing the entire unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the test button on the alarm as instructed by the specific manufacturer. Locate the button marked "test" and push it for at least one second to activate the alarm.

    • 2

Remove the alarm from the wall or ceiling if no sound is made when depressing the test button. Grasp the detector, and depending on the model, turn to the left or right to loosen from the mounting bracket and remove.

    • 3

Examine the AC wiring, if so equipped, on the alarm. Check the wiring connection between the alarm and the wiring in the base to determine if there is a secure connection. Push the terminals firmly together.

    • 4

Open the battery cover to access the 9-volt battery. Use a screwdriver if necessary to remove the cover and replace the old battery with one that has been recently purchased. Plug the terminal connection securely to the end of the battery and place the battery cover securely in place. Install the alarm back onto the base. Retest.

Relocate an alarm that continually goes off. Move alarms that are too close to sources of heat such as a kitchen stove or fireplace.

    • 6

Clean a fire and smoke alarm with a duster or rag to remove dust and debris. Clean the detector thoroughly to remove any debris that could potentially interfere with the alarm detecting heat or fire and not sounding properly.
