How to Disconnect a Smoke Alarm

Hard-wired smoke alarms offer security over battery-operated alarms because there is no chance of the battery draining and the device not working at a time of need. In some cases, however, it is necessary to disconnect one of these alarms for repair, replacement or some other reason. Disconnection is only slightly more difficult than popping a battery out of a temporary alarm. It is important to remember to properly disconnect the flow of electricity before beginning the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the switch in the electrical circuit box that corresponds with the smoke alarm. If the breaker is not marked, you must locate it by process of elimination until you are sure the power is disconnected.

    • 2

Grasp the cover of the smoke alarm with one hand and gently pull it away from the housing. Locate the mounting screws holding the unit to the ceiling. Unscrew these using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Pull the unit away from the ceiling carefully to expose the electrical wires. Unscrew the wire nuts from the black wire and the white wire and place the unit aside.

    • 4

Place the wire nut back onto the black wire and wrap it with black electrical tape to ensure it holds in place. Repeat the same step for the white wire. If the alarm is one of a series, place the black and white wire into a single wire nut to complete the circuit and allow power to reach the others in the series.

    • 5

Replace the cover and clip it back onto the housing to conceal the wires. Reactivate the power by switching the circuit at the main electrical box back to the on position.
