Find the right location in your home or building to place the ionizing alarm. A fire might start anywhere in a room so place the alarm in the center of the room or hallway. If you choose to attach the alarm to a wall, be sure to place the top of the smoke alarm approximately 4 to 6 inches away from the ceiling.
Remove the smoke alarm from its mounting plate. Mark the location of the screws on the ceiling by placing the mounting plate on the ceiling and using a pencil or other instrument to make marks on the ceiling through the holes in it.
Drill holes at the locations that have been marked using an electric drill. When drilling, keep the dust away from the smoke alarm. The drilled holes on the ceiling should line up with the holes in the mounting plate. Keep plaster from reaching the smoke alarm while drilling.
Insert anchors into the ceiling and screw the mounting plate onto the anchors using screws. Install the smoke alarm to the mounting plate by lining up the tabs on the mounting base to the openings on the smoke alarm.
Turn off the smoke alarm when it goes off by pushing the Test or Pause button. The alarm reminds you that it has been silenced by flashing a red LED light.
Verify proper functioning of your smoke alarm every week by depressing the Test or Pause button for no longer than 20 seconds. When the smoke alarm makes a noise, release the button and the noise will stop.
