How to Return Ionizing Smoke Detectors to the Manufacturer

Ionizing smoke detectors contain a low level of radioactive material. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, most smoke detectors contain both ionization and photoelectric features in order to detect a fire in your house. Federal law allows you to dispose of an ionizing smoke detector in the trash; however, local ordinances vary. It is recommended that you send the smoke detector back to the manufacturer in order to properly dispose of it. There are different ways to send your smoke detector back to the manufacturer, depending on your brand and model.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your smoke detector. Determine who the manufacturer is in order to contact the company. Not all smoke detector manufacturers will accept returned units.

    • 2

Contact the manufacturer if your ionizing smoke detector is made by American Sensors/Dicon or System Sensors. These companies require you to receive a reference number before returning the smoke detector. The number to reach American Sensors/Dicon is (800) 387-4219. System Sensors can be contacted at (800) 736-7672,

      extension 1.

    • 3

Return your ionizing smoke detector to Sears. Some Sears locations are designated collection sites for ionizing smoke detectors.

    • 4

Find the address to mail your ionizing smoke detector back to the manufacturer. Some smoke detectors list the address on the unit. (You can also review the list found in the "Resources" to find the address of your manufacturer.)

    • 5

Remove the battery from your ionizing smoke detector before mailing. Properly dispose or recycle your batteries.

    • 6

Place the smoke detector in a small box. Do not take apart the smoke detector. Include a note that states you are mailing back the smoke detector for disposal.

    • 7

Mail your ionizing smoke detector through the United States Postal Service or UPS Ground Service. Do not send a smoke detector by air mail.
