How to Install an Electro Signal Lab 445CRT

The Electro Signal Lab 445CRT is a smoke detector that registers the level of current smoke in the air. If an above-normal level of smoke is detected, an alarm sounds to warn you of unsafe conditions. The smoke detector mounts to the wall and is wired to a nearby electrical panel. Before installing the 445CRT, shut off the electric power to the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the tip of a flat head screwdriver into the slot on the base. Press the tip of the screwdriver against the release tab and open the cover.

    • 2

Grab the terminal block cover with your fingers and pull it straight up to remove it from the smoke detector.

    • 3

Position the mounting base on the wall. Mark the mounting screw holes with a pencil. Drill holes in the wall on the pencil marks using a power drill.

    • 4

Drill a hole large enough to accommodate 3 14-AWG wires in the middle of the mounting holes using a power drill with a circle cutter attachment.

    • 5

Align the mounting holes on the mounting base with the drilled mounting holes in the wall. Insert a Philips screw into each hole and tighten with a screwdriver.

    • 6

Insert a black, white and bare 14-AWG wire into the hole and feed the wires to the electrical panel. Attach the wires to a fish line if you have trouble feeding the wires through the walls.

    • 7

Cut the wires to length using wire cutters. Strip 3/8 inch of casing from each end of each wire using wire strippers.

    • 8

Insert the white wire into the neutral terminal on the smoke detector. Insert the black wire into the hot terminal and the bare wire into the ground terminal. Attach the opposite end of the each wire to the corresponding bus terminal on an open breaker on the electrical panel.

    • 9

Push the terminal block into the mount clips on the inside of the mounting base and snap it into place.

    • 10

Apply expanding foam per the manufacturer’s instructions to the circular hole to seal the gap around the wires. If not sealed, air penetrates the hole and disrupts the sensors on the smoke detector.

    • 11

Push the front cover onto the detector base and snap it into place.
