How to Get a Smoke Detector to Stop Chirping After It Goes Off

Most models of smoke detectors are battery powered and are mounted onto a wall or ceiling. Some models are wired, but still may use batteries as backup. When a smoke alarm begins to "chirp" in intervals, this means the battery is weak and needs to be changed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder under the smoke alarm. Make sure the ladder is sturdy and can hold your weight.

    • 2

Climb the ladder with new batteries in hand, and twist off the smoke alarm from the mounting brackets. Open the battery chamber on the unit. Remove the battery or batteries, and replace them with the new.

    • 3

Test the smoke alarm by pressing and holding down the test button, which should make the unit emit a loud alarm. Twist the alarm back onto its mounting brackets.
