How to Install a Garrison Smoke Detector

A Garrison smoke detector is a common brand of smoke detector. Install it the same way as you'd install any other basic smoke detector. Even if the Garrison smoke detector is a replacement, you cannot count on the screw holes lining up with the old ones. You must drill new holes and insert new anchors into those holes to secure the smoke detector to the ceiling safely.

Things You'll Need

Electric drill
1/4-inch drill bit
Smoke detector

Pencil
Hammer
Screwdriver

Instructions

  Find a spot to locate the Garrison smoke detector, preferably in the center of the ceiling.

  Hold the base of the smoke detector against the ceiling in the desired location. Mark the location of the holes with a pencil.

  Use an electric drill with a 1/4-inch drill bit to drill holes in the ceiling where the pencil marks are located. Drill the holes at a 90-degree angle to ensure a proper fit.

  Insert the anchors that came with the smoke detector into the holes in the ceiling. Tap the anchors gently with a hammer if needed to make them flush with the surface of the ceiling.

  Hold the base of the smoke detector up to the ceiling so the holes in the base align with the holes in the ceiling. Use a screwdriver to fasten the screws that came with the smoke detector into the holes in the ceiling. Twist the body of the smoke detector onto the base.
