How to Test NFPA Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors, also known as smoke alarms, help to save lives. The smoke detector in your home has a very important job to do. It detects smoke and heat caused by a fire and sounds an alarm, which lets you and your family know that the house should be evacuated immediately. The NFPA, or National Fire Protection Association, offers fire safety tips for homeowners, as well as important information about testing your smoke detectors regularly.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the batteries in each smoke detector in your house once a year, regardless of whether or not they pass the test. For the cost of a few batteries, you could save your family members' lives.

    • 2

Test each smoke alarm in your home at least once a month. Have a designated day each month to check the alarms and mark it on your calendar.

    • 3

Press the "Test" button on each of your smoke detectors to test them. You should hear a loud ringing or beeping sound. This is the same sound to listen for when fire or smoke is detected.

    • 4

Replace the batteries and press the "Test" button again if your smoke detector did not pass the first test.
