An Introduction to Automatic Fire Sprinklers

Automatic fire sprinklers are not in the majority of homes yet, as of 2010. They can be very effective in reducing loss of material possessions and saving lives when a home fire takes place.

  1. Installation

    • The cost of adding sprinklers to new sites being constructed is as low as 1 percent of the total cost of the building. Sprinklers are able to be installed flush against the surface where it is being attached.

    Effectiveness

    • The National Fire Protection Association states about sprinklers, "They reduce the risk of death or injury from a fire because they dramatically reduce the heat, flames, and smoke produced, allowing people the time to evacuate the home."

    Property Loss

    • Sprinklers in a home that has a fire can cut the property loss by a half to two-thirds the amount a victim loses in a house without sprinklers. Only the sprinkler closest to the fire will spray to prevent water damage in areas of the home where no fire exists.
