Heat Detector Testing Tools

A heat detector is a fire alarm system that registers a change in the ambient temperature in an area ranging from three feet for small heat detectors (like those for cooking) to up 2,500 feet for room-sized devices. These types of alarms usually work in conjunction with smoke detectors, which register the presence of smoke. These tools must remain in proper working order for them to alert you to danger. It is therefore an excellent idea to periodically test them.

  1. Solo 461

    • The Solo 461 Heat Detector Tester is cordless, which means you don't need to plug it into an electrical outlet; instead it runs on battery power. If your battery is dying, you need to take it out and recharge it in the charger that comes with the device. The battery is rechargeable even in a vehicle, since you can plug it into your cigarette lighter when the car is running. You can use this device either by itself or with a pole to reach up to 30 feet high. This device works by directing heat at your heat detector, simulating fire conditions when heat rises. It can simulate temperatures up to 194 degrees Fahrenheit. If the alarm goes off, then you know the device is working properly. If not, you need to either repair or replace it. This device cost between $600 and $800 in 2010.

    Testifire

    • This tool allows you to test fire, carbon dioxide (CO) and heat detectors. You can quickly clear the tests so you can do more additional tests right after the previous ones. The device has a pole, which allows you to reach really high ceilings, and the test screen is right on the pole so you can see it while you're working. The Testifire tool is upgradeable; the company releases firmware updates with the latest technological advances for smoke, CO and heat detection. Other benefits of this tool include non-flammable and environmentally friendly plastic used in its construction. It can also test the most popular types of fire and smoke detection devices. As of 2010, this tool cost approximately $2,100.

    Solo 822

    • This is a combination smoke and heat detector testing kit, which comes with a 20 foot pole that allows you to test devices on higher ceilings. This pole also allows you to remove non-functioning heat and smoke detectors. The Solo 822 kit comes with its own carrying bag to hold all the tools. You can even take apart the tools so they fit more easily into the bag. The kit comes with both the smoke and heat detectors, pole, sensor and pole head, to which you can attach the different detector heads. As of 2010, this kit cost approximately $2,200.
