How to Install First Alert

First Alert smoke alarms contain a variety of useful safety features. A First Alert smoke alarm screws into a ceiling or wall and senses smoke using a photoelectric sensor with 360-degree access to the air. If smoke is detected, the First Alert smoke alarm plays a repeating sound involving three beeps and a pause. The First Alert smoke alarm includes a test button that activates the alarm, a beeping low battery alert, and a flashing light that signifies the unit is receiving battery power.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard flat-head screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Drill with 3/16-inch drill bit
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the mounting bracket from the base of the smoke alarm by holding the base firmly and twisting the mounting bracket counterclockwise.

    • 2

Hold the mounting bracket against the ceiling or wall.

    • 3

Make a pencil mark at the center of each mounting slot on the wall.

    • 4

Place the mounting bracket and smoke alarm aside so they won't get covered with dust from drilling the wall.

    • 5

Drill holes in the wall through each pencil mark using the 3/16-inch drill bit.

    • 6

Remove the plastic screw anchors from the plastic bag of screws and insert the anchors into the holes in the wall. Tap the plastic screw anchors lightly with a hammer until they're flush and level with the ceiling or wall, if necessary.

    • 7

Position the mounting bracket over the plastic screw anchors and screw it in using the provided screws and your screwdriver.

    • 8

Install the included battery into the smoke alarm unit, matching the "+" and "-" symbols on the battery to the "+" and "-" symbols on the battery compartment. Push the battery into the compartment until it snaps into place and doesn't move. It's normal for the smoke alarm to beep when the battery is inserted.

    • 9

Position the smoke alarm over the mounting bracket on the ceiling or wall and turn it clockwise until it's attached securely.

    • 10

Test the smoke alarm by pressing and holding the "Test" button until the smoke alarm sounds for a few seconds. Release the test button.
