How to Use a Smoke Detector in the Kitchen

Smoke detectors and fire alarms are an imperative part of homeownership. New homes being built today must include a specific number of detectors to ensure the residents’ safety. However, to help prevent false alarms, you may want to install a smoke detector somewhere other than the kitchen. False alarms can be dangerous, as many homeowners get tired of the repeated warnings and end up removing the batteries from the safety device. If you feel it is absolutely necessary to have a smoke detector in that location, place it as far away from the stovetop and oven as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Batteries
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

  1. Installation

    • 1

Locate the area where you would like to install the smoke detector, making sure the device is at least 10 feet from the stovetop and oven and at least 4 inches from walls when mounting it on the ceiling. Avoid installing the detector near doorways or windows.

    • 2

Fetch your ladder and, using a pencil, mark the ceiling at the location where you would like the alarm to be installed to ensure proper placement of the screws.

    • 3

Using a screwdriver and the screws that were provided with the smoke detector, mount the device onto the ceiling. For self-adhesive detectors, peel the backing off the adhesive strip and press the detector firmly on the ceiling.

    • 4

Add the batteries, and press the “Test” button to ensure that the device is working properly.

    Testing

    • 5

Maintain the smoke detector. Test the alarm once a month, and replace the batteries annually, as recommended by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

    • 6

Climb on a secure ladder, and press the “Test” button. Action is not required if you hear the testing alarm. Replace the batteries if the alarm is not triggered during the test.

    • 7

Clean the detector to remove any dust and debris each time you test the batteries.

    Use

    • 8

Wave a towel back and forth to clear the air around the smoke detector if you burn an item when cooking, being careful to not hit the device. Open nearby windows to let the smoke out of the house.

    • 9

Exit the home immediately if your smoke detector signals a fire and it is not a false alarm. Meet the other members of your family at a pre-determined location.

    • 10

Call 911 from a neighbor's house. Wait for the fire department to arrive and put out the fire.
