How to Test Fire Sprinkler Flow

Each year more than 2,500 people die as a result of home fires. The risk of dying decreases by approximately 80 percent and the average property loss decreases by 71 percent in homes with properly working fire sprinklers installed. The sprinklers not only save lives and property but may also qualify for a discount on homeowners insurance. Like with smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors, routine maintenance requires testing the units. An annual water flow test is recommended.

Instructions

    • 1

Notify the fire department to make them aware of the test.

    • 2

Slowly turn on the water flow test control valve. The control valve may be called the main drain, inspector test or test and drain valve. The control valve is one when it is in line with the pipe.

    • 3

Wait while the water runs for approximately 60 seconds. The alarm will sound while the water runs.

    • 4

Slowly turn the control valve off.

    • 5

Record the date the of the test and notify the fire department to inform them that the test is complete.
