How to Test Fire Alarm Systems

The fire and smoke alarms in your home alert you when they detect dangerous smoke and thus can prevent a tragedy. Keeping your alarms in good working order is critical in keeping your family safe. The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that you test your smoke alarms every month and replace the batteries in your alarms once a year. While every alarm system is slightly different, most can be tested using the same procedure. A properly functioning fire alarm is an important tool in keeping your home and family protected from fire.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate all of the fire alarms in your home. Most homes have an alarm in each bedroom, hallway, basement and living room areas. Make a list of each room that has a fire alarm so you can be sure to test all the alarms in your home.

    • 2

Start with the first room on your list. Stand under the alarm. Find the light that indicates that the alarm has power. Make sure that the light is illuminated.

    • 3

Place a step ladder under the alarm and climb up so you can safely reach the alarm.

    • 4

Find the test button on the alarm. Press the button firmly with your finger.

    • 5

Listen for the alarm. The alarm will sound for roughly five to ten seconds and then will turn off on its own.

    • 6

Repeat this testing procedure for every alarm on your list. Replace immediately any alarms that do not function properly.
