How to Interconnect Smoke Alarms

The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside every separate sleeping area and on every level of a home, including the basement. The association also recommends that every alarm be interconnected, meaning that when one sounds, every alarm in the home sounds. This improves your ability to hear fire alarms and exit your home safely. Many homes built after 1989 have interconnected fire alarms that are hard-wired, or connected to the home's electrical system. For existing homes, or homes that do not meet the NFPA standards, wireless interconnected fire alarms are available.

Things You'll Need

  • Hard-wired smoke detector (if necessary)
  • Battery-operated interconnected smoke detectors
  • Screwdriver
  • Ladder

Instructions

    • 1

Replace one hard-wired alarm in an existing system with a new hard-wired alarm of the same brand as your new wireless alarms. Turn off the electricity in that room. Press the tabs to remove the cover of the old unit. Disconnect the wires, keeping track of which colored wires are connected to each other. This may not be necessary if there is an adapter on the new unit.

    • 2

Screw the new unit to the wall mount. Twist together the colored wires of the new alarm to the matching colored wires in the wall. Turn on the electricity. Snap the cover into place.

    • 3

Press the test button. The unit should chirp and display or speak the names of rooms. Program the alarm's location by pressing the test button when the correct room is listed.

    • 4

Insert batteries into the first wireless alarm. Press and hold the test button. Release the button when the alarm chirps. Press and hold the test button of the new hard-wired alarm until the wireless alarm chirps and its green light stops blinking. The unit will display or speak a list of rooms. Press the test button when the appropriate room is displayed or heard.

    • 5

Insert batteries into the second wireless alarm. Hold the test button. Release the button when the alarm chirps. The green power light will blink.

    • 6

Press and hold the test button of the first wireless alarm until the second wireless alarm chirps and the green light stops blinking. Set the second wireless alarm’s location by pressing the test button when the appropriate room is displayed or heard.
