How to Install a Smoke Alarm Battery

Smoke alarms are required to be installed in new homes, based on the fire code of the area in which they are built. Such alarms sound when smoke is present, but may not respond in time to allow individuals in the home to escape if the are not adequately maintained. Replacing the battery on the smoke alarm regularly, such as once a year, allows the alarm to work correctly and may save lives.

Things You'll Need

  • Step ladder
  • 9-volt battery

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off power to the smoke alarm by turning the circuit breaker it is connected to to the OFF position. This should be shown in the inside of the power panel for the home. If the smoke alarm is not connected to both electrical wiring and battery, skip this step.

    • 2

Place the step ladder underneath the smoke alarm on a flat, stable floor. Use the step ladder to reach the smoke alarm.

    • 3

Place your thumb on part of the smoke alarm that appears to be divided from the remaining unit. This is the battery door and may be labeled. Push away from the center of the unit on this piece to slide the battery door open.

    • 4

Remove the current battery from the smoke alarm unit and discard appropriately.

    • 5

Replace with a new 9-volt battery. Be sure to line up the charges, shown by the positive and negative symbols on both the battery and the smoke alarm unit.

    • 6

Close the battery door by sliding the door removed in step 3 back into place on the alarm unit.

    • 7

Turn on the power at the main panel by turning the circuit breaker to the ON position. If the smoke alarm is not connected by electrical wiring, skip this step.

    • 8

Press the "Push-to-Test" button on the smoke alarm unit for 5 seconds to ensure battery is replaced correctly. The alarm should sound within 3 seconds and may continue to sound for up to 10 seconds. This means the unit is working correctly.
