First Alert Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation

About 170 people in the United States die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas without odor and color. Inefficient or defective internal combustible appliances, such as gas-fired furnaces, portable generators and gas log fireplaces, can produce carbon monoxide fumes. Many states require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors on every level in the building and near sleeping quarters.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Drill with 3/16-inch drill bit
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Open the battery hatch cover on the First Alert carbon monoxide detector. Insert the batteries. Take care to follow the diagram in the hatch compartment for proper placement of each battery. Close the battery hatch cover.

    • 2

Turn the alarm over. Press the "test" button until the alarm sounds. The alarm will automatically turn off after a few beeps.

    • 3

Open the small bag of screws and screw anchors that accompany the First Alert carbon monoxide detector. Choose a location for the device. First Alert recommends that you avoid placing the alarm closer than 4 inches from where the wall meets the ceiling.

    • 4

Unfold the mounting guide template from the package. Place it against the wall at the desired location. Use the pencil to mark inside the template mounting holes.

    • 5

Remove the template from the wall. Drill the holes at your pencil marks.

    • 6

Insert the plastic screw anchors into the drilled holes. Tap them lightly with the hammer, if necessary.

    • 7

Insert the screws into the anchors with the flathead screwdriver. Allow the screws to project from the wall 1/8-inch.

    • 8

Slide the back of the First Alert carbon monoxide detector onto the screws until you feel the screws enter the mounting brackets.
