How to Replace Smoke Detectors Every Year

Smoke detectors are essential in any living or working environment to warn occupants in the event of a fire. Several national organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association, recommend having multiple smoke detectors throughout the house. Monthly and yearly maintenance of smoke alarms is essential to make sure they work properly. Replacing the smoke detectors every year is not necessary, however, unless they are not properly functioning. Instead, replacing the batteries should suffice. However, if there are any problems at all with the smoke detectors, they should be replaced immediately.

Test the smoke detector at least once a month to make sure it is working. Each smoke alarm has a test button, usually on the front panel. Push the button and wait to hear a beep. Some smoke alarms also may feature a green light that will blink if the alarm is working properly. Your alarm's instructions will detail specifically how to test that model. If it appears the alarm is not responding to the test, check the batteries to see if they have died. If the batteries are not the problem, throw away the alarm and purchase a new one.

Replace the smoke alarm's batteries twice a year. Several fire departments and national fire protection agencies recommend doing this when you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time so that it is easier to remember. After changing the batteries, run a test to make sure the alarm is still working properly, as outlined in step one.

Replace older alarms. The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing older smoke alarms, especially if they are 10 years or older.

Listen for warnings. If batteries run low, most smoke alarms will emit a "chirp" sound. If you hear a chirp that is usually repeated multiple times as the battery continues to run low, immediately replace the batteries. Check to make sure a change of batteries allows the detector to work properly. If not, replace the detector.
