My Smoke Detector Stopped Working

Smoke detectors are essential building safety devices, so it's important to ensure that they are working. Troubleshooting and maintaining your smoke detectors will improve performance and can save lives when necessary.

  1. Battery

    • Smoke alarms mainly use 9-volt, AA, or AAA batteries. If the smoke detector is not working, the batteries are likely running low. Most detectors will beep continuously as a warning to replace the batteries.

    Testing

    • Take down your smoke detector and replace the batteries. Press the "Test" or "Reset" button on your device. Your smoke detector should sound for a few seconds. Test your smoke detector at least once a month.

    Cleaning and Maintenance

    • Take down your smoke detector. Vacuum in and around it to remove dirt, cobwebs, and insects.
