How to Install a Smoke Alarm Battery Backup

Installing a battery backup for smoke detectors in the home is an important step. If the primary power source for the smoke detector is electric, having a battery backup will allow the smoke detector to work in the event of a power outage. For smoke detectors that rely primarily on a battery, the battery is necessary for the smoke alarm to be effective. Use the test button on smoke alarms to check the battery regularly, at least on a monthly basis.

Things You'll Need

  • Batteries
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the packaging of the smoke detector to see what type of batteries are needed, if it's new. If the smoke detector is already in use, remove unit from wall or ceiling and inspect the outside of the battery compartment to figure out what batteries are needed. Depending on the smoke detector unit, you may need A, AA, or D batteries.

    • 2

Open the battery compartment. Some smoke detectors will require a screwdriver if the compartment is screwed shut, while others have battery compartments that simply slide open or slide out.

    • 3

Insert the correct batteries into the compartment. Align the positive end of the battery with the plus sign on the inside of the battery compartment. Close the door of the battery compartment, screwing it shut again if necessary.

    • 4

Use provided hardware to fasten the smoke detector to the wall or ceiling according to the manufacturer's instructions, or plug it directly into an outlet if the smoke detector is that type.

    • 5

Push the "Test" button on smoke detector unit. The unit will either beep loudly or say the words "Smoke" or "Fire" depending on the type of smoke detector.
