Smoke Alarm Tutorial

Smoke alarms are mandatory for buildings and homes, so knowing how to use them properly can save lives. These small devices are extremely sensitive and should be properly installed and maintained so they perform at optimal levels. Knowing where and how to install them not only improves overall safety, but also promotes longevity. Installing and using smoke detectors is easier than it looks.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws

Instructions

    • 1

Select the location you want to install your smoke detector. Some of the best areas include the basement, hallways, corridors and sections that lead to living areas. The location you select must be at least 3 feet away from vents, air conditioners and heaters.

    • 2

Remove your smoke alarm and mounting bracket from the packaging, and insert the batteries into the battery compartment. Depending on your smoke detector, use AA, AAA or 9V batteries. Refer to your smoke detector's user manual if you are unsure of the acceptable batteries.

    • 3

Measure up to 12 inches from the ceiling if you want to install the smoke detector to your wall. Mark the spot. Place the mounting bracket on the spot you marked, and drill screws into the holes on the bracket. Alternatively, mount the bracket to your ceiling. Refer to your smoke detector's user manual if you are not sure how to install the mounting bracket.

Attach your smoke detector to the mounting bracket. Press the "Test" or "Reset" button for at least five seconds to test your device. The alarm should go off for a few seconds. Verify that the LED light on your smoke detector is flashing.
