Homemade Fireproof Storage Box

House fires happen from time to time. They can be of varying severity. There is no need to fear losing your valuables, however, because there are materials available to every consumer with which they can build their own fireproof storage containers.
  1. Materials

    • Approach building a fireproof storage box in much the same way you would build any other storage box. The secret is to build the box using Super Firetemp or any other fireproof construction material. See the link in Resources for how to order this material or, for more information, call (616) 459-9800. It can be worked on using standard power tools in much the same way as wood. It comes in different degrees of thickness, which provide varying levels of protection from fire. Also, refractory grade braided fiberglass fabric makes a good sealer around the lid.

Beyond Firetemp, all you need are screws to connect the box's panels together, a pair of hinges for the top and casters for the bottom if you want to make moving the box easy. There are also high-temperature adhesives that can be used instead of glue.

    Putting It Together

    • Cut the bottom panel first. Use whatever measurements you desire. Cut the two side panels, making them of equal width to the base. Cut the front and back panels based on how the bottom and sides connect.

Countersink holes in the front and back panels and attach them to the side panels. This is where you can also use the high temperature adhesives.

Cut a piece for the top that will fit over the sides. From this, cut a 2 1/8-inch piece and attach it to the back side. Then connect the rest of the top with hinges.

To seal the interior of your box, you may want to build a lip into the top and cover it with fiberglass fabric, then place more fiberglass fabric on the inner surface of the box. This will provide a seal to prevent heat from reaching the contents.

You can then attach the casters to the bottom and enjoy enhanced safety and security.
